Ex-tennis star Paradorn courts golf

‘To make a living (from golf) is not my goal,’ Paradorn said, according to a press release from tour organisers.. ‘My goal is to be the first Asian athlete changing from other another sport to play professional golf.. ‘Scott Draper from Australia, a top-50 player in world at tennis, he turned pro in Australia playing golf – he was the first one.. ‘I want to do the same and create history for a Thai athlete.’ Other top tennis players have tried their hand at the capricious game of golf, including Ivan Lendl, the eight-time grand slam winner and current coach of Andy Murray who has competed in a handful of professional events.. Rafael Nadal and Pete Sampras are also keen players, while Andy Roddick caddied for Zach Johnson at the par-three contest before the 2011 US Masters.. For Paradorn, it’s a return to competitive sport after a wrist injury – originally sustained while racing motorbikes – forced him to retire from tennis in 2010, ending a career that took him to No.9 in the world.. Paradorn, who has also spent time as a Buddhist monk, has had mixed fortunes in recent years, splitting from his wife, former Miss Universe Natalie Glebova, and announcing a bid to stand for parliament in 2011.. Among his varied portfolio of ventures, he has also opened a restaurant, launched a health supplement billed as a herbal alternative to Viagra, and played a leading role in 2010 Thai movie ‘Bang Rajan 2′.. But a chance encounter in 2011 with a childhood friend, who is now a golf professional, introduced him to the game and he now practises daily at clubs in Bangkok and Pattaya.. From Thursday, Paradorn will put his skills to the test at the $US100,000 ($A97,400) Singha Pattaya Open, his second outing on the ASEAN PGA Tour after missing the cut with back-to-back 81s at the Singha Esan Open in February. Tennis: Andy Murray tells Dan Evans to work harder

If you come and play on the clay courts and on the slower hard courts, it’s a different game, too, where you need to be physically stronger, you need to have better patience on the court, as well.” That said, Murray was still impressed with the way the team fought back and turned the tie around.. The win put Britain through to play Croatia away in September, a tie that Murray has committed himself to playing.. With Murray in harness and the rest of the team playing as they did in Coventry ten days ago, it is a very winnable tie.. Davis Cup, though, is far from Murray’s thoughts this week.. Today he will play his first clay court match of the season as he takes on Edouard Roger-Vasselin at the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters.. In theory, the world No 81 ought to be a simple introduction to life on the red dirt but Roger-Vasselin is already in the winning groove having come through two rounds of the qualifying competition and having beaten Robin Haase in the first round proper.. By contrast, Murray has not played a competitive match on the red stuff since losing to David Ferrer in the quarter-finals of the French Open last summer.. Novak Djokovic is just pleased to be able to stand up on the clay at the moment.. He sprained his ankle during Serbia’s Davis Cup tie against the United States ten days ago and left it until the last minute yesterday before deciding whether to play in Monaco.. An MRI scan revealed no serious damage to the joint and, now that Djokovic is a Monte Carlo resident, he felt obliged to try his luck at his home-from-home event.. “If I wasn’t here in Monaco it would be very likely that I wouldn’t play,” said the Serb, who is scheduled to play Mikhail Youzhny today. Murray enjoying life on clay

Tennis

The 25-year-old has enjoyed incredible success around the world and has reached six Grand Slam finals, winning the US Open last year to finally end his tag as the ‘nearly man’.. He has also reached the last four in the big-four events on another six occasions and is now ranked second in the world behind Novak Djokovic.. But he has yet to win a title on clay, with a march to the semi-finals in 2011 his best effort at Roland Garros to date.. It was always thought that the US Open or Wimbledon represented the Scot’s best chance of winning a major and that has proved to be correct, but he confessed that he enjoys the European swing on the slowest surface and is keen to prove his ability on clay.. “I enjoy the clay-court season.. All these cities that we play in, like Rome, Monte Carlo and Paris, are beautiful cities,” he told Sky Sports.. “Monte Carlo is a fun tournament to come to because it is a bit different to what we see for the rest of the year.. “I have played some good tennis here in the past, and I hope that I can do the same this year.” Murray is set to play France’s Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters on Wednesday and will be looking to replicate his performances in 2009 and 2011, when he reached the semi-finals of the Principality tournament..
